The barista
The first قهوهخانه or kahvehane (the ancestors of coffee houses) appeared under the Ottoman Empire and arrived in Europe during the 17th century. They mainly developed in Great Britain, where they maintain their tradition of welcoming diverse audiences who share the pleasure of exchange and cultural, social, intellectual, or political debate.
Thanks to the development of coffee culture in Italy, the word barista gained popularity. Originally, it referred to anyone serving drinks from a bar. Now it refers to both the person and the place where coffee and other mostly non-alcoholic beverages are served. For about twenty years, these spaces have known a boom in English-speaking countries and are being exported internationally in the form of franchised chains that continue to promote sociability but do not necessarily fulfill the social functions that "tiers-lieux" now claim.
That is why Nexus wishes to make its space available for projects and initiatives, to allow them to grow. In addition to evening activities, the barista stands as welcoming place to work or to relax, whether alone or with friends and colleagues.
